Bihar Revives Ancient Nalanda Water Management Channels

Bihar has launched a project to restore the ancient water management systems used at Nalanda Mahavihara. These include terracotta channels, lotus-shaped cisterns, and aquifer-linked reservoirs used 1,200 years ago. Archaeologists, engineers, and monks are working to replicate these systems using clay and traditional lime techniques. Once operational, they will irrigate heritage gardens and serve as community water sources. The effort is also educational, demonstrating the wisdom of sustainable Buddhist-era engineering to modern planners and tourists.
